Background

In furtherance of its mission to provide leadership in the responsible use of land ULI Columbus, in partnership with the city of Columbus, Franklin County, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, and The Ohio State University (OSU) Knowlton School of Architecture’s Department of City and Regional Planning, has developed a strategic vision, Columbus 2050, that explores these important questions for our 12-county Central Ohio region.

Moving Forward

Columbus 2050 calls for a comprehensive regional development strategy that encourages nodal development linked to a downtown core. The lack of a regional multimodal transportation network is a major impediment to accomplishing this goal, “Columbus is one of the largest cities in the country that does not have a fixed-guideway mass transit system” and “83 percent of commuters drive alone to work each day.”

Building on the work of Columbus 2050, a logical next step for ULI Columbus is to bring together the private and public community to help define a well-planned regional transportation network for the Central Ohio region and provide guidance toward the accomplishment of this goal.

If ULI does not facilitate this necessary discussion on transportation, Columbus and the Central Ohio region will face an uncertain future as, “investment will gravitate to places that welcome business and view public investments—in education, infrastructure, and innovation—as prerequisites for progress and economic sustainability.“—What’s Next?
